Over time, the players will iron themselves out. A bigger issue is mmr inflation, imo. So let’s say either a high level player or a low level player takes a break. His mmr rank will not be as accurate because everyone else gained and lost mmr. The athlete wins, and ranks up, playing against athletes of similar rank. The child loses, and plays against other children. But, if the pool of athletes is small, and the children rank up against each other, then you will have a child the same rank against an athlete. You can see this effect the most in the 4k-5k range. However, they will get matched up with other 5k players, and this tends to be frustrating for the 5k’s, who are getting relatively clueless players. Another issue from this is that the lower skilled players have less opportunity to play against better opponents.

Players using multiple accounts create a negative matchmaking experience at all skill brackets, so our goal is to add just enough friction to this process that the number of players doing this will be noticeably reduced. Having more players using their primary accounts will have a positive effect on both Ranked and Unranked Matchmaking.
There will be a two-week grace period from today during which players have time to register a number, but starting on May 4th, accounts without a registered number will no longer be eligible for Ranked play.
Six months have passed in the new Dota 2 Ranked system, which means the first season has already elapsed. Introduced in November, it brought a new way to show off your matchmaking accomplishments and skill. And, hopefully like your MMR, the system is evolving with time.
Trooper cards for general infantry: There are currently Star Cards to acquire, across all classes, vehicles and characters, but clearly the odds of a crate containing a duplicate card only grow as you open more. Some high-level cards are extremely rare, too. This is the darkness of loot crates. The final currency is Battle Points. You earn Battle Points by performing well in matches, and can only spend them in that same match.
They allow you to spawn as various vehicles or Hero characters, but for just one life. Before the recent Hero price cuts , they were a whopping 40, Credits, which would take dozens of hours and yes, that is somewhat ridiculous. But it could go either way. The second Dark Side mission in the singleplayer Arcade mode, which pits players against waves of AI attackers, gives the opportunity to be Vader killing dozens of the devils. An arguably overlooked question in all this is whether you need everything?
All Star Cards, every costume piece, every grenade variant or minor boost to ability recharge times for every single class, vehicle and hero? Dunno about you, but I tend to find and then stick to favourites. Battlefront 2 nonetheless takes blatant advantage of this kind of thinking:
The new Ranked matchmaking has seasons, which last 6 months, a new leaderboard system and new additions for party games. After delaying it for over a week it is finally here! The latest game update reworked the matchmaking ranked system that we used to have in Dota 2. Medal rankings starting from the highest Divine Image via wykrhm on Twitter. Another important note to make is that from now on both Party and Solo games are considered when evaluating your skill and determining when your Medal gets upgraded.
The day The International Battlepass ended, r/Dota2 was full of posts asking Valve to bring back the ranked roles matchmaking. It was one of the best features of the Battlepass and it ensured balance in the team instead of a team ending up with 5 cores.
Dota 2 Matchmaking “Hidden Pool” This pool is known for its extremely long queue times. If you think you have been segregated merely for running multiple instances, then stop running multiple instances for a day or two, and then try to find a match again. You should find that you are back in the ordinary matchmaking pool with the rest of the community. We certainly regret misidentifying adorable married couples playing together or fans watching multiple games as bad actors.
We can try to tune our detection heuristics to better discriminate between malicious players and ordinary players. However, please don’t interpret anything I’ve said in this post as sanctioning any particular use case for running multiple instances, or as a description of our policy that you can depend on us to follow in the future. While we will try to exercise judgement, we cannot promise any player who runs multiple instances that they will be free from negative consequence.
For example, players who repeatedly abandon games before they begin, or intentionally throw the match. Importantly, I think both of the OPs in the original threads were about the shadow-ban pool, not the “hidden pool” of flamers. It is possible that the “hidden pool” doesn’t exist. It seems like almost everyone who has been put in it has either run multiple instances of Dota or otherwise majorly messed up.
My questions are about the “hidden pool”: How do you know if you’re in the “hidden pool”?

Valve has stated that matchmaking tries to fulfil several criteria: The teams are balanced. The discrepancy in skill between the most and least skilled player in the match is minimized. The highest skill Radiant player should be close to the same skill as the highest skill Dire player. The discrepancy between experience measured by the number of games played between the least experienced player and the most experienced player is minimized. Each team contains about the same number of parties.
For example, the matchmaker tries to avoid matching a party of 5 against 5 individual players. Players’ language preferences contains a common language. Wait times shouldn’t be too long. Types Normal Match Unranked or casual games do not display matchmaking ratings and still doesn’t track your MMR for solo and party queues. All PvP game modes are available for unranked matches. In accountancy, depreciation refers to two aspects of the same concept: Businesses depreciate long-term assets for both tax and accounting purposes. The former affects the balance sheet of a business or entity, and the latter affects the net income that they report. Generally the cost is allocated, as depreciation expense, among the periods in which the asset is expected to be used. This expense is recognized by businesses for financial reporting and tax purposes.
Medals cannot decrease in rank even if they lose many games. The player may have multiple Steam accounts. The system remembers and judges player performance based on their peak skill level, not their current skill level.
In the DOTA world, smurfing is when a player creates a new account after already having made one, and recalibrates the account once a player reaches level thirteen. The player essentially develops the account in order to play at a level lower than their actual mmr. Others will create a smurf account in order to play with new-to-DOTA friends with less experience or to experiment with new builds.
Smurfing is generally looked down upon, particularly by the developers. DOTA 2 players must now register a unique phone number in order to participate in ranked matchmaking. Once the account has become eligible for ranked, an “Associate Phone With Dota” option will display within the find match window. The same phone number cannot be used on multiple DOTA accounts.
That number will not be able to be used for three months in order to prevent abuse. Online services that provide virtual phone numbers do not qualify. If a player does not have an accepted phone number, they will not be able to participate in ranked matchmaking. Should your number not qualify, you will need to use a different phone number.

Valve usually waits for events of this caliber to conclude before publishing major patches for its ever-growing MOBA. Here are the cliff notes: Two major changes are coming to Ranked matchmaking: The first is pretty self-explanatory for longtime Dota players. Beginning May 4, anyone interested in ranked matchmaking must have a valid phone number linked to their Steam account.
There will also be a three-month waiting period before that number can be registered to another account.
In part 2, we will discuss some other effects and weaknesses of such a system. Before we really begin talking about inflation at the highest level of play, we need to look at what it really means for a player to have a MMR of 4. The most comprehensive analysis of what it really means to have a certain MMR comes from this reddit post.
This graph is the end result. However, there are several problems with this system. Firstly, it is currently unknown to us as to whether this ratio changes from patch to patch.
The dataset aims to capture all DOTA players, which is not technically possible due to limitation of the access to that data. A small fraction of the player base will always remain hidden.
